I sped through Stephen Fry's book and was impressed with the humor and wit (common to Fry) and also the seriousness of matter. I wondered how much of Fry lived in his character Michael, and how much research had to be done to write the novel and its alternative version of historical events in Germany.
Perhaps, though, what was most poignant was what Fry imagined would remain the same, versus what would be different. Computers (such as those already in development in the 1930s and 40s with IBM) would actually have existed...recording and copying possibilities would also have been possible. This made me think....what changes do particular decisions in our life have on the world around us? How differently would things unravel? What are the consequences of our actions? Are they smaller or bigger than we can imagine?
Thoughts?
